How Jewellers Calculate Selling Price

When you sell gold to a jeweller, they don't pay the full market rate. Here's the actual process jewellers use to calculate what they'll pay you:

Step-by-Step Calculation Process

  1. 1 Measure Gross Weight: Jeweller weighs your entire jewellery piece.
  2. 2 Remove Stone Weight: Stones, pearls, and other non-gold materials are deducted.
  3. 3 Check Purity: Verify if it's 24K (99.9%), 22K (91.6%), 18K (75%), or other purity.
  4. 4 Convert to Pure Gold: Calculate pure gold weight = Net weight × Purity.
  5. 5 Apply Today's 24K Rate: Multiply pure gold weight by current 24K gold rate.
  6. 6 Deduct Charges: Subtract melting charges, testing fees, and jeweller margin (typically 1-5%).

Typical Deductions by Jewellers

Gold Type You Receive Deduction
Gold Coins 98–99% 1–2%
Hallmark Jewellery 96–98% 2–4%
Non-Hallmark Jewellery 94–96% 4–6%
Old/Damaged Jewellery 90–95% 5–10%

Formula Used by Jewellers

Final Sell Price = ((Weight − Stone Weight) × Purity × Gold Rate) − Deduction − Melting Charges

Or simplified: Sell Price = (Weight × Purity × Gold Rate) − Nominal Deductions

Example Calculation

Your Gold: 10 grams of 22K hallmark jewellery

Today's 24K Rate: ₹6,000 per gram

Calculation:

  • • Pure gold = 10 × 0.916 = 9.16 grams
  • • Gold value = 9.16 × 6,000 = ₹54,960
  • • Deduction (2%) = ₹1,099
  • • Melting charges = ₹200
  • You receive ≈ ₹53,661

Why You Don't Get Full Gold Rate

Key Factors Affecting Your Selling Price

  • Net Weight: Stones and non-gold materials are removed from the total weight.
  • Purity Level: 24K gold is worth more than 22K or 18K gold per gram.
  • Melting & Testing Charges: Jewellers charge for refining and testing your gold.
  • Jeweller Margin: Dealers keep 1-5% as their profit margin.
  • Hallmark Status: Hallmarked jewellery gets better rates than non-hallmarked.
  • Condition: Old or damaged jewellery receives lower rates.
