Gold bullion—whether in the form of bars or coins—is a widely held store of value. Unfortunately, counterfeit pieces exist, and their sophistication continues to improve. Knowing how to verify the authenticity of gold is therefore essential for anyone who buys, sells, or inherits precious metals. This explainer outlines the most common and reliable methods, from simple visual checks to advanced laboratory techniques. None of these methods alone is foolproof, but combining several greatly reduces the risk of accepting a fake.

Visual and Physical Checks

The first line of defence is a careful examination of the piece itself. Genuine gold has a distinct colour, weight, and density that are difficult to replicate precisely.

  • Dimensions and weight. Every reputable mint or refiner publishes exact specifications for its products. A digital caliper and a precision scale can confirm that a bar or coin matches the stated dimensions and mass. Even small deviations may indicate a counterfeit. Gold is dense—about 19.3 grams per cubic centimetre—so a bar of the correct size should weigh exactly what is expected. If the weight is low, the piece may be plated or made of a less dense metal.
