The Recycling Process
The journey from scrap to refined gold involves several stages:
- Collection and sorting – Scrap is gathered from various sources and sorted by purity and type. For example, jewellery is often separated by karat weight, while electronic waste may be dismantled to concentrate gold-bearing components.
- Sampling and assaying – A representative sample of each batch is analysed to determine its exact gold content. This step is critical because the payment to the scrap seller is based on the assay result.
- Smelting or chemical processing – Low-purity scrap is typically smelted in a furnace with fluxes that separate gold from base metals. Higher-purity scrap or gold-plated items may be treated using chemical processes such as aqua regia or electrolytic refining.

Contribution to Global Supply
Recycled gold is a consistent and sizable part of the world’s annual gold supply. Its share of total supply varies with economic conditions and consumer behaviour. When gold prices are high, scrap supply tends to increase as holders are more willing to sell unwanted items. Conversely, when economic uncertainty leads to hoarding, scrap volumes may decline.
In most years, recycled gold accounts for roughly a quarter to a third of the total gold supply globally. The exact proportion fluctuates, but the role of recycling is structurally important because it adds liquidity to the market and reduces the need for new mining.
Comparison with Mined Gold
- Energy and environmental impact – Recycling gold requires far less energy and water than mining, and it produces smaller quantities of waste. It also avoids the environmental disturbance associated with open-pit or underground mining.
- Purity – Recycled gold can be refined to the same high purity as newly mined gold. There is no difference in quality between recycled and mined gold once both have been refined.
- Traceability and ethical considerations – Recycled gold is often preferred by buyers who wish to avoid the ethical and environmental concerns linked to some mining operations. Certification schemes and chain-of-custody programmes help verify that gold has been recycled from responsible sources.
Because gold does not degrade or lose its value with recycling, the metal can be reused indefinitely. This circular nature means that much of the gold ever mined remains available in some form, contributing to the ongoing stream of recycled supply.
